Did you ever stop and wonder about the cosmetics you use? What about lotions or perfumes? I honestly did not ever stop to think that any of the items I was buying were unsafe. It was not until I discovered I had an autoimmune disease that many are not aware of. My autoimmune disease is called PBC. Primary Biliary Cirrhosis, also known as Primary Biliary Cholangitis, is new to many of you, and I want to share why everyone needs to know about it. My journey with PBC, and what I want every person to know, is that what you put on your skin does matter!
According to www.Wikipedia.org ,
Primary biliary cirrhosis, also known as primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), is an autoimmune disease of the liver. It is marked by slow progressive destruction of the small bile ducts of the liver, with the intralobular ducts and the Canals of Hering (intrahepatic ductules) affected early in the disease. When these ducts are damaged, bile and other toxins build up in the liver (cholestasis) and over time damages the liver tissue in combination with ongoing immune related damage. This can lead to scarring, fibrosis and cirrhosis.
This disease is deadly. There are no cures, but only medicines that can possibly slow down the progression of the disease. After doing much research, more medical journals in the European nations have noted more about PBC than in the US. Coincidence? I do not think so. Although there are other factors that may cause PBC, as we do not know for certain, I do find this alarming: http://www.thefamilygp.com/hair-dye-and-liver-disease.htm

Now given that I did not really pay attention to ANY of my makeup or skin care products, when I got this diagnosis, I was utterly stunned. We did not know if I was going to die in the next few months. We were scared and researching all that we could. My husband and I searched medical journals for hours. I spoke to anyone I could to see if their liver numbers were off. One thing was very alarming: toxins!
Yes, I know toxins are in everything. but when you know better, you do better. And when you have an 8 year old staring at you not knowing if you will live or not, you sure try as hard as you can to find anything you can to stop the disease in its tracks. So, that meant trying to detox my body and becoming more aware of what I was putting on my body.
This was a whole new world to me. I never thought twice about my detergent, my soap, lotion , or makeup. Today I am very aware of what I apply to my body.
According to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, anything you apply to your body gets absorbed with 26 seconds. Your skin is your biggest organ. If you stop and think of it in those terms, everything becomes clear. What you apply to your skin is going right into your bloodstream and affecting your other organs. This wonderful organization made a terrific video describing the cycle of toxins in our every day environment. You can find the video on YouTube by accessing this link: https://youtu.be/pfq000AF1i8
I am on a mission to spread awareness. I am on a journey to hopefully stop this deadly disease for myself and others. That is one of the biggest reasons I am so passionate about Younique. If you Google the difference between the US and EU standards for cosmetics, it can be overwhelming. But, I will sum it up with this paragraph taken from http://ensia.com/features/banned-in-europe-safe-in-the-u-s/ :
“Cosmetics regulations are more robust in the EU than here,” says Environmental Defense Fund health program director Sarah Vogel. U.S. regulators largely rely on industry information, she says. Industry performs copious testing, but current law does not require that cosmetic ingredients be free of certain adverse health effects before they go on the market. (FDA regulations, for example, do not specifically prohibit the use of carcinogens, mutagens or endocrine-disrupting chemicals.) So, even though the personal care products and cosmetics products industry has extensive voluntary ingredient safety guidelines — and obvious incentives to meet them — they are not legal requirements.
Choosing a cosmetic line that is made according to the EU standards is definitely the way I am choosing to go. I am thrilled that Younique is made according to the EU standards. It means a lot less chemicals and toxins invading my body. This is why becoming a Younique Presenter, and sharing the love of the products, are the root of why I am a Presenter today.
